Abstract
This paper is a summary of the results of the PhD entitled: Design, Fabrication and Quality Control of the Multifocal Intraocular Lenses presented and defended by L. Remon at Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (October 2012) and supervised by Prof. J.A Monsoriu and Prof. W.D. Furlan [1]. Multifocal IOLs (MIOLs) are a promising alternative to presbyopic patients (suffering from cataracts). There exist several commercially available models and designs of MIOLs, each one with its own drawbacks and advantages, evidencing that the optimum MIOL has not yet designed. This work presents the design, and quality control of a new design of MIOL with a fractal profile. This type of lenses provides an extended depth of field and a reduced chromatic aberration compared to other commercially available designs. Additionally, to assess the optical quality of MIOLs, two different experimental setups were designed "ad-hoc"; according to the requirements of the UNE ISO 11979-2 standard.
