Abstract

This article presents an overview of the historical, institutional, and thematic development of optics and photonics in Mexico, within the framework of the special issue of Óptica Pura y Aplicada. It reviews the background from pre-Hispanic cultures to the consolidation of specialized research centers such as INAOE, CIO, and CICESE, as well as the role of public and private universities in education and knowledge generation. The special issue gathers 19 scientific contributions that reflect the thematic and geographic diversity of optical research in Mexico, organized into areas such as the history of optics, education, optical metrology and instrumentation, vision, sensors and photonic devices, biophotonics and medical optics, optoelectronics, and quantum optics. This collection offers a representative sample of the dynamism, interdisciplinarity, and quality of national scientific work in this strategic field.
