Abstract

In telecommunications, optical media are importance for their data transmission characteristics, especially in waveguide item. This work studies a basic optical fiber characterization since one implementation of a SONET STS-1 laboratory. It studies parameters such as delay and attenuation. This laboratory uses the virtual and distance education model implemented by the Degree in Telecommunications Engineering . Also, it gets experimental results from the EMONA TIMS training platform. The work methodology was action-research and experimental. The main result is the students get significant learnings about optical fiber characterization under virtual and distance education model. Also, the experimental results verify the data provided by the platform on the fiber patch cord. Finally, the main conclusion is the teaching method is very important to get significant learning. The laboratory can be virtual and remote, what is important is the laboratory has a good guide and the platform should be robust.
